The Click

August 25 - 31

Hi folks! Welcome once again to The Click. Or better known as, "that thing where that guy talks about stuff on TV." I'm here, as ever, to be your ever vigilant, debonair and dashing guide through the dank, moist pits of television to point out the unspoiled anime that exists in their natural habitat. And hey, just for old time's sake: All dates and times are tentative! All times listed are Eastern! That means that literally none of the shows listed below are exempt from crazy last-minute schedule revisions, so don't be terribly shocked if what you assume to be Pokémon instead becomes Die Hard 2: The Novelization: The TV Movie, starring Carl Weathers. Oh, and if you live in some weird, freaky non-Eastern time zone, be prepared to do a little math.

Sadly, it's kind of a dry week, all told. Pre-emptions abound, the most notable of which is Adult Swim's nigh-monthly Futurama marathon this Saturday. No new Bleach or Blood+ this week, I guess. Back in the early days of The Click, back when the internet actually was distributed through a series of tubes liable to be clogged by information and assorted vermin, any Adult Swim or Cartoon Network pre-emption left The Click a very empty gesture. Now, though, with so many other channels offering at least two or three shows here and there, I can still offer a feature-filled Click to the world and feel like a more whole person because of it.

So, without further ado, here's what everyone should be watching, followed by what everybody probably wants to watch, and then rounded up by things everyone has already probably seen:

Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo

Saturday August 25 9:30pm - Episode 70 "Baldy Bald Bottoms Out! Best of Luck, Be Well and Bye-Bye"

I cannot stop loving this show. I realize that because of this fact, I am shunned from my friends, unpopular at parties, and not allowed in certain fine dining establishments. Everywhere I go, I see the sour expressions on peoples' faces, their furrowing brows and narrowing eyes practically saying, "This man enjoys Bo-Bobo? What an utter loser. I'll bet he smells like hot dogs, too."

However, I make no apologies for loving this show. Especially since this is the penultimate episode, and given Cartoon Network's none-too-great track record for keeping well-performing but not mega-hit anime shows in repeats, my favorite follicle-flailing friend may be gone from US TV forever after next week. It brings me sadness. So I urge you all to not judge me for my illness, but rather, to accept me for who I am. Maybe even... love me.

So let it be said: Bo-Bobo will never, EVER again be featured as a Click Pick after this week. Unless somebody offers me a dollar.

Ayakashi switches to its second main feature in this haunted omnibus, a centuries-old tale known as the "Tenshu Monogatari," concerning the unrequited love between a heavenly goddess and a lowly human man. Comparisons could be drawn to the movie "Ghost" and the series "Ah! My Goddess" except sans pottery and goddess harem hijinx.

The fugitive Vincent makes a tough choice to either continue on his quest with his comrades, or save the life of Re-l by risking his own. I... made myself excited to see this episode based upon what I just wrote. I'm not sure how I should feel about that.

There, he's given the choice to leave, or stay and fight The Guild on the Sylvana's terms. There, I did it again. I'm excited to see this episode again. Way to go, me.

It's not often you see shows with umlauts on TV: that's almost reason enough to watch MAR right there. Being a colorfully fun kids' show helps too, I suppose. Anyway, this week, Ginta sizes up his newest opponent, Girom, and powers up his mustachioed weapon to a new level!

Wow, I can't honestly say that I ever expected this show to wind up on TV. Anywhere. An odd choice, to be sure: an otaku-centric vampire story, with a lolicon embodiment galavanting about? Nonetheless, it's certainly not a bad show, just one made for a very specific audience. So if you're into little vampire girls with cat ears and the various things they say and do and sing (and let's be honest - if you're reading this site, quite a few of you are), check it out.

What happens when you stretch a three-page gag in Kishimoto's manga into a full-length 22-minute episode? This! Watch with slight befuddlement and amusement as Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura attempt to catch a glimpse at Kakashi's uncloaked face. With hilarious results! Maybe!

Lil' Slugger shows up too, of course.

Totally unrelated, and not to mention at least six years too late, but: Lain has the most hauntingly beautiful opening theme of any anime I've yet seen. Still, after all this time. That's quite a feat. This episode contains that theme song, and about 21 minutes of craziness, as young children around Lain are acting rather odd, what with their staring blankly into the sky with their arms stretched forth.
