The Click
September 1 - 7

by Brian Hanson,

Welcome back, Click faithful! Another weekend brings us to yet another edition of The Click, fancifully full of your favorite anime-on-TV programming, with the usual acerbic and silly commentary that has since become a Click staple. I'm going to say "Click" several more times until the point where it ceases to contain any real meaning to me.

Putting aside the usual caveats this week (which are, essentially, that nothing I say and do can be construed as fact in any North American country, due to ongoing litigation that is wholly unrelated to The Click in whole or in part... oh, and remember that all of the dates and times listed below are Eastern, and tentative!), the new fall TV season is just about ready to begin in earnest. Or at least, it should, but the Cartoon Network and the other big anime TV outlets seem quite pleased, for better or worse, with their current lineup. Except for YTV up in Canada, that is: they've got their hockey mitts on what is sure to be the next big anime franchise in North America, Death Note. No doubt Viz has contracts for its US television debut in the cards, but us poor plebeians probably won't know about any of that until the ink dries.

Speaking of YTV, I would simply like to take a moment to point out the unsung hero of The Click. A man (at least, I would assume?), an utterly unselfish and wonderful man, who has time and time again corrected, cajoled, and helpfully provided me with all the big Canadian TV listings for this week. That man's name is Jesse Betteridge, commonly known as "Pepperidge" on the forums. Here is a rap I wrote about him:

(The hardcore gangsta rap has been removed per Jesse's request. Sorry Jesse! -B.H.)

Three cheers for Jesse Betteridge! And remember folks, I love getting feedback from you guys, so post post post in those forums if I screw up or make fun of certain ethnic groups or anything!

Death Note
(YTV)
Friday September 7 10:00pm - Episode 1 "Rebirth" (Repeats Sat Sep 8 1:30am)

There's probably a slight chance you've heard of Death Note already. It isn't as though the now-completed manga hasn't been a bestseller in the US since its initial release last year, weaving its intricately plotted and darkly satisfying tale of death and intrigue into the eyesockets of avid fans since. YTV is proudly featuring Madhouse's huge-in-Japan TV adaptation in primetime on Friday nights, quite an appropriate spot for this rather morose and strangely grown-up Shonen Jump property. I would assume that most of you are probably sick to death by now of people attempting to summarize the general plot of Death Note, but why tread forth over well-worn ground myself? Death Note is about a gaunt, forgotten Muppet named Ryuk who desperately wants a best friend of his very own; he accomplishes this by leaving his special notebook in the human world, where a bright young chap named Light Yagami discovers it! He also learns that by writing peoples' names in it, he can cause them to die. But at least Ryuk and Light are now best friends!

PREMIERES:

Ayakashi
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday August 28 7:00pm - Episode 5 (Repeats Tue Aug 28 10:00pm, Wed Aug 29 2:30am, 2:00pm)

Protip for the soon-to-be-married: make sure there's a clause in your prenuptual agreement that states should your mistreated spouse happen to pass on, her ghost is not allowed to haunt within thirty-five feet of your residence. Unlike the poor sap in this week's Ayakashi.

Bleach
(Adult Swim)
Sunday September 2 12:00am - Episode 47 (Repeats Sun Sep 2 3:30am)

Ichigo keeps on trainin' for his "Bankai" which is some sort of bursting, gushing power that increases the power of his decidedly phallic "weapon" in a grand miasma of sexual imagery. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into this. Also, Momo escapes from her prison to do battle against the unknowing Toshiro!

(YTV)
Friday September 7 9:30pm - Episode TBA (Repeats Sat Sep 8 2:00am)

Episode 27 should be playing on YTV this week, but the TBA is there just to play it safe. Keep your phones at the ready, Canadian ladies and gentlemen, and make sure to give YTV a good piece of your minds if its another repeat.

Blood+
(Adult Swim)
Sunday September 2 12:30am - Episode 23 "Two Chevaliers" (Repeats Sun Sep 2 4:00am)

Saya and esteemed cohort Hagi make a return trip to "The Zoo" and wind up facing superpowered beings known as "Chevaliers." Will Saya's vampire-slayin' ways be able to defeat these ultra-powerful allusions to classical French literature? Find out!

Bobobo-bo Bo-Bobo
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday September 1 9:30pm - Episode 71 "Funneled Into a Tunnel and Bamboozled by Noodles"

Bo-Bobo good, you watch, yes?

Cat's Eye
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Monday September 3 9:30am - Episode 32 "Museum Filled With Danger" (Repeats Tue Sep 4 5:30am)
-Tuesday September 4 9:30am - Episode 33 "The Goal is To Propose" (Repeats Wed Sep 5 5:30am)
-Wednesday September 5 9:30am - Episode 34 "Did You See Hanz?" (Repeats Thu Sep 6 5:30am)
-Thursday September 6 9:30am - Episode 35 "The Exposure of Cat's Eye Secret" (Repeats Fri Sep 7 5:30am)
-Friday September 7 9:30am - Episode 36 "The Man Who Knows Hanz" (Repeats Sat Sep 8 5:30am)

This week on Cat's Eye: a devious man learns of the thievin' sisters secret, and threatens to expose them to the world at large! But will the world at large be able to tear themselves away from the American Idol finale and repeats of 24 long enough to care? Find out!

Ergo Proxy
(Fuse)
Saturday September 8 12:00am- Episode TBA

Fuse was rather good for a long while about keeping up to date on their new episode listings - what gives? Do they not like me anymore? Is it my teeth? It's my teeth, I'll bet. I shouldn't keep them lying around like that.

(G4TechTV Canada)
Thursday September 6 8:00pm - Episode 7 "re-1124c41+"

Note to the people who called me a dumbass for thinking this episode title was "leet-speak" the last time I discussed it: I knew the whole time that it was a clever allusion to Hugo Gernsback's seminal 1911 science fiction novel! I was playing stupid for the purposes of attempted comedy! Seriously! I don't wear this eyepatch and smoke my pipe to look purposefully stupid, people. This episode of Ergo Proxy is about Re-l discovering the toxic yet beautiful "outside world," and learning of the god-like powers contained by "The Proxy."

Eureka 7
(YTV)
Friday September 7 11:00pm - Episode 40 "Cosmic Trigger"

The assault against the erstwhile Voderac is in full swing, which prods Holland and Renton and Eureka and others inside the Vodera Shrine to put a stop to this war madness.

Gundam Seed Destiny
(YTV)
Friday September 7 9:30pm - Episode 24 "Differing Views" (Repeats Sat Sep 8 2:30am)

Despite how things seem in the real world, on television, things such as "war" and "violence" are often not seen in the best light by the fictional public. In this very realistic episode of Gundam Seed Destiny, war and violence are openly frowned upon. Hence the "differing views" of the title, there.

Kami Chu
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday September 4 5:00pm - Episode 6 (Repeats Tue Sep 4 8:00pm, Wed Sep 5 12:30am, 12:00pm)

Man, if I were a prepubescent God, My treehouse would have become a full-fledged command center and outpost, housing every video game known to mankind and a full-scale arsenal of chainsaw-wielding sentient robot guards. And of course by "My" treehouse, I meant "My friend Dominic's," but I would probably abuse My divinity to annex it under My Holy Territory. Kami Chu's Yurie is actually selfless and loving, unlike myself, so nothing that badass happens in this episode.

Kyo Kara Maoh
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday September 4 5:30pm - Episode 32 "The Locked Memory" (Repeats Tue Sep 4 8:30pm, Wed Sep 5 1:00am, 12:30pm)

Yuri and his loyal subjects return to the land of Caloria, wracked by the savagery of war and desperate for assistance - or perhaps not, as many are still skeptical of receiving help from the "evil" Demon King. Never look a gift horse in the mouth, I always say. Even if that mouth has several rows of mean, nasty teeth that are oozing with the blood and bone fragments of innocents.

Last Exile
(G4TechTV Canada)
Sunday September 2 8:00pm - Episode 7 "Interesting Claus" (Repeats Mon Sep 3 12:00am)

The Sylvana and their new recruits, Claus and Lavie, do battle against the powerful members of the nefarious Guild, including their hotshot pilot, Dio.

The Law of Ueki
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday September 4 6:00pm - Episode 34 "The Law of Team Marilyn" (Repeats Tue Sep 4 9:00pm, Wed Sep 5 1:30am, 1:00pm)

Ueki's team preps for their next fight against Team Marilyn, who vows to defeat Ueki's sprightly team of colorful upstarts in only four minutes. Four minutes are obviously only a small fraction of a 22-minute episode, so no doubt there's more than that.

MAR
(YTV)
Friday September 7 7:30pm - Episode 15 "John Peach: The Seventh Team Member?"

The ragtag group of do-gooders under Ginta's watchful eye has no time to celebrate from their latest victory, as a boy named John Peach shows up and starts lookin' for a fight. Hooray for cartoonish, bloodless violence!

Moonphase
(AZNTV)
-Monday September 3 8:30pm - Episode 4 "Big Brother, I Feel Like Kissing" (Repeats Tue Sep 1:30am, 5:30am)
-Tuesday September 4 8:30pm - Episode 5 "It's a Full, Full Moon" (Repeats Wed Sep 5 1:30am, 5:30am)
-Wednesday September 5 8:30pm - Episode 6 "Heart Throbs in Kyoto" (Repeats Thu Sep 6 1:30am, 5:30am)

I'm not one to cast aspersions in general; in fact, I probably have that very fact printed on my state-issued vehicular operation license. "Not One To Cast Aspersions." But, seriously, just the title alone, "Big Brother, I Feel Like Kissing," makes me want to wretch for days and never stop. I know the show itself is just silly fun, and I know this from having seen it myself, but even the slightest hint of that subtext is enough to make me violently ill. Anyway, the rest of the show is fine, sure, so those of you with AZNTV can enjoy this show and not feel guilty at all despite my mild aspersions being cast your way.

Naruto
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday September 1 9:00pm - Episode 102 "Mission: Help and Old Friend in the Land of Tea"

Filler-ific! Naruto and his compatriots travel to the dainty-sounding Tea Country to protect a young ninja-in-training named Idate compete in a race while being hounded by powerful enemy ninja on all fronts. If it sounds stupid, that's because it is, but thankfully the truly atrocious Naruto fillers don't start for a little while yet.

(YTV)
Friday September 7 8:00pm - Episode TBA

Again, this might be a new episode this week? If not, get out those phones and start a-dialin' or perhaps a-emailin' if you're not so vocally inclined.

Noein
(Sci Fi)
Monday September 3 11:00pm - Episode 11 "Out of Sync"

As the kids get older and wiser and more powerful and stuff, some of them deign to consider moving away from their close-knit circle of friends for higher educational pursuits, against the wishes of course of said friends.

One Piece
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday September 1 10:00pm - Episode 102 "No Way Out"

A dreaded Sea King attacks the straw hat crew, and they discover that the enveloping Rainbow Mist has taken them to a different time and space than that of the world outside them. Eerie. When do the new, Funimation-dubbed episodes start again? Not until late next month, maybe? Okay.

Orguss
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Tuesday September 4 8:30am - Episode 31 'Children" (Repeats Wed Sep 5 5:00am)
-Wednesday September 5 8:30am - Episode 32 "Lost World" (Repeats Thu Sep 6 5:00am)
-Thursday September 6 8:30am - Episode 33 "Last Charge" (Repeats Fri Sep 7 5:00am)
-Friday September 7 8:30am - Episode 34 "Space-Time Creation" (Repeats Sat Sep 8 5:00am)

Orguss is the shortest of ImaginAsian's TMS Anime Classics selection, so it's actually about to wrap up this week, sans the single remaining episode that'll be aired the following Monday. Given Noboru Ishiguro's credentials, no doubt Orguss has an epic finale filled to the brim with robots and melodrama and songs and such!

Paradise Kiss
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday September 4 6:30pm - Episode 6 "New World" (Repeats Tue Sep 4 9:30pm, Wed Sep 5 2:00am, 1:30pm)

This week's Paradise Kiss deals with that most taboo of subjects: utterly censentual, slightly-hinted-at sexual intercourse between a man and woman. Yukari's first modeling gig goes well, and nervously invites her crush-a-mundo George to her friend's apartment for "coffee," which... you know.

Paranoia Agent
(G4TechTV Canada)
Friday September 7 8:00pm - Episode 7 "MHz"

The detectives uncover more bizarre truths about the omnipresent Lil' Slugger; how he can be mysteriously nowhere and everywhere at once, his choices for victims on the brink of losing their sanity, and other bizarre clues that point far away from Kozuka, their current suspect. Why is this show so great?

Pokemon
(Cartoon Network)
-Saturday September 1 9:00am - Episode 491 "Oh Do You Know the Poffin Plan!" (Repeats Mon Sep 3 6:00pm)
-Saturday September 1 9:30am - Episode 492 "Getting the Pre-Contest Titters!" (Repeats Mon Sep 3 6:30pm)

I haven't played my copy of Pokemon Pearl in months but these new episodes are bringing me dangerously back to the brink of wanting to. In that my interest in playing it has raised from "Never" to "Only Slightly," which is dangerous enough as far as I'm concerned. In this week's Pokemon hour of power, Ash and his buddies arrive in Floaroma town and cute-up their Pokemen for the Pokemon Contests.

Remi
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Monday September 3 6:00am - Episode 35 "Save Remi!" (Repeats Mon Sep 3 9:00am, Tue Sep 4 4:30am)
-Tuesday September 4 6:00am - Episode 36 "Mathias the Musical Genius" (Repeats Tue Sep 4 9:00am, Wed Sep 5 4:30am)
-Wednesday September 5 6:00am - Episode 37 "Gift for Mama" (Repeats Wed Sep 5 9:00am, Thu Sep 6 4:30am)
-Thursday September 6 6:00am - Episode 38 "Mama Balblanc" (Repeats Thu Sep 6 9:00am, Fri Sep 7 4:30am)
-Friday September 7 6:00am - Episode 39 "Hurry to Paris!" (Repeats Fri Sep 7 9:00am, Sat Sep 8 4:30am)

Remi is the hardest of the hardcore gangstas; raised on the streets, livin' alone with no family, and doing things his own way. Yeah.

Serial Experiments Lain
(G4TechTV Canada)
Saturday September 1 8:00pm - Episode 7 "Society" (Repeats Sun Sep 2 12:00am)

Lain's identity spreads through "the WIRED" like a virus, and she is taken to an individual who challenges her perceptions on the world as she knows it. Freaky.

Tenjho Tenge
(Fuse)
Saturday September 8 12:30am - Episode TBA

Though I'm not sure which episode will be playing this week (Thanks Fuse!), this is Tenjho Tenge we're talking about here, so you can expect some stiffly-animated and confusing fight scenes punctuated by closeups of butts and boobs and panties.

Texhnolyze
(G4TechTV Canada)
Saturday September 1 8:30pm - Episode 7 "Plot" (Repeats Sun Sep 2 12:30am)

The Union and Organo gangs reach their boiling point, and suddenly all-out gang warfare seems like the only possibility. Considering the screenwriters of this show, though, you can probably be sure that nothing is exactly as it seems.

Tokko
(Sci Fi)
Monday September 3 11:30pm - Episode 11 "No Woman, No Cry"

Shindo continues to live as the cop on the edge, but with big dark scary things hounding him at all times, maybe that isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Tokyo Underground
(G4TechTV Canada)
Sunday September 2 8:30pm - Episode 7 "Break Through: Into the Underworld" (Repeats Mon Sep 3 12:30am)

With the power of friendship, the scrappy and spunky kids of Tokyo Underground break into the... Underground, to fight the evil bad guys that live... in the Underground.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday September 1 11:30am - Episode 117 "A Snake in the Grass, Part 1"

Jaden, Duel Monster superstar, tests his mettle against the sinister-sounding Professor Viper.

Zatch Bell
(YTV)
Friday September 7 8:30pm - Episode TBA

New episode? Or tepid, warmed-over repeat? YTV's malignant schedule doesn't have the answers.

MOVIES/SPECIALS

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
(Encore Action)
Tuesday September 4 11:20am

Akira
(Encore Action)
Tuesday September 4 1:05pm (Repeats Tue Sep 4 7:50pm)

Speaking of tepid and warmed-over, these movies are great but are better experienced on DVD with improved clarity and sound and distinct lack of Encore Action watermarks in the bottom corner of the screen.

I suppose that wraps things up on my end! Below are a bountiful bevy of repeats waiting to be adopted by your loving, caring eyes. I'll be back next week of course, pimping my new concept album project produced by will.i.am! Bye folks!
