The Click
October 27 - November 2

by Brian Hanson,

Ghoul evening, boys and ghouls! Oh crap, I used that one already. Let me start over.

Welcome to the cavalcade of nightmares, despair, and allegory known as The Click! In your haste to load up on booze or candy, or both, you might be remiss towards the spine-tingling offerings that will be oozing out of your quite-possibly-possessed-like-in-the-movie-Poltergeist television set in the coming week! Just remember, however, that all the dates and times listed below are tentative... or else.

So kick up your spiky goth boots, sling your sack of T.P. and eggs at will, and brush away those cobwebs and entrails of your latest victims because there's some seriously spooky stuff on this week! Although, and maybe I'm just ranting a bit here, but there was never a point in my life when I found any of the kitschy Halloween artifice rather scary - I mean, some guy in a sheet jumps out of a bush and says "Boo!" and you're startled for a moment, and it goes away. You know what's truly frightening? Life. Nothing is more chilling and deeply unsettling than the realization that literally nobody in this sad world would notice, care, or even move your lifeless corpse out of the street if you suddenly died in public. Moving on...

Death Note
(Adult Swim)
Sunday October 28 12:00am - Episode 2 "Confrontation" (Repeats Sun Oct 28 3:30am)

(YTV)
Friday November 2 10:00pm - Episode 2 "Confrontation" (Repeats Sat Nov 3 1:30am)

Requiem From the Darkness
(G4TechTV Canada)
Saturday October 27 8:00pm - Episode 2 "Willow Woman" (Repeats Sun Oct 28 12:00am)

Death Note brings the October chills like no other show out there - from Ryuk's grisly appearance to Light's psychotic God complex to the show's dark, disorienting art direction, there's no show better to compliment your All Hallow's Eve shenanigans. This week, the intrepid and elusive master detective, nicknamed "L," is brought in to investigate the mass deaths caused by Light's Death Note.

Also worthy of a Halloween spotlight, even if its a few days later, is Requiem From the Darkness, which is a sadly overlooked little gem of a series about a traveling storyteller, who amasses as many creepy tales as possible for his upcoming "Book of One Thousand Tales." The design and animation in this series is striking and top-notch, so all you G4 viewers up north had better not miss it.

PREMIERES:

Black Lagoon
(G4TechTV Canada)
Friday November 2 8:00pm - Episode 2 "Mangrove Heaven"

Shockingly, Black Lagoon features no actual black lagoons, nor any creatures thereof. Instead, its a lighthearted but entertaining military action show about the Black Lagoon, a rough-and-tumble band of mercenaries and the clumsy, teetotaling Japanese salaryman who winds up as their hostage and, much to his chagrin, accomplice.

Bleach
(YTV)
Friday November 2 10:30pm - Episode TBA(Repeats Sat Nov 3 2:00am)

I often have a recurring nightmare where I receive numerous threats from angry Canadians over the lack of clarity insofar as the YTV listings are concerned, and a massive, angry mob of them arrives at my door early in the morning. They then ride me out on a rail, blindfolded, until I find myself in a dark, humid room where I am then tied to a tiny, uncomfortable chair. A group of statuesque women, resembling taller, more pronounced versions of my ex-girlfriends, then take turns slapping me with dense, terse contemporary literature, while calling my own writing "sophomoric" and "infantile." I should mention that through the entirety of this nightmare I am completely nude. Here is Bleach!

Blood +
(Adult Swim)
Sunday October 28 12:30am - Episode 30 "Joel's Diary" (Repeats Sun Oct 28 4:00am)

Because as we all know the barometer for our collective taste can only be measured by what Hollywood is making into movies, vampires are hot right now! If the slightly meh adaptation of 30 Days of Night still has you hankerin' for more bloodsucking and bloodletting and other general uses for blood, then boy is Blood+ apropos! In this episode, Saya prepares for her inevitable fight with the powerful Diva by reading in Joel's eponymous diary.

Digimon
(Toon Disney)
Monday October 29 8:30pm - Episode 219 "The Ultimate Team No More?" (Repeats Tue Oct 30 1:00am, Fri Nov 2 8:30pm, Sat Nov 3 1:00am)

Don't worry - despite the "mon" in the title "Digimon" meaning "monsters," Digimon's assorted toothy creatures are cute and fun! Except for the bad ones. Such as the Black Garurumon, which I hereby challenge somebody to attempt to say five times fast with cotton balls in their mouth, who attacks our intrepid hero while he and his own Digimon are having a bit of a spat.

Dinosaur King
(4KidsTV)
Saturday October 27 9:30am - Episode 8 "Maui Owie!"

The ever-vigilant "D-Team" rushes to Hawaii to capture a Styracosaurus. Here is its Wikipedia entry, because you were going there to look it up anyway. I'll just save you some time.

Ergo Proxy
(G4TechTV Canada)
Thursday November 1 8:00pm - Episode 15 "Who Wants To Be In Jeopardy?"

Re-l and Vincent and another are trapped in a bizarre quiz-show, with their freedom or death at stake. You really gotta make sure to phrase you answers in the form of a question, or else.

(Fuse)
Saturday November 3 12:00am - Episode TBA

When I was a child of about five, I had a recurring nightmare, usually once or twice a night, of the moon eating me. A booming, lumbering voice would emanate from my closet and declare, "I am the moon, and I'M GONNA EAT YOU!" And then, sure enough, the orbiting satellite known as the moon would launch from my closet and swallow me whole, and I would awake, screaming. For much of my early childhood I would refuse to look at the moon at night, and making things especially difficult was a series of McDonald's commercials around that time that had a leather-jacket and sunglasses-wearing Moon who drove a pink 50's convertible. This moon, for some reason, strikingly resembled the one in my nightmares, sans of course the bitchin' car and Fonzie-attire. This anecdote is wholly unrelated save for the whole "nightmares from not having the right episode titles" discussion earlier.

Eureka 7
(YTV)
Friday November 2 11:00pm - Episode 48 "Ballet Mecanique"

Renton and Eureka have, like oh my god, reached the Command Cluster but then somebody shows up and could mess everything up and then oh my GOD Dewey's big weapon is ready to fire and WHAT COULD HAPPEN?!?

Gundam Seed Destiny
(YTV)
Friday November 2 9:30pm - Episode TBA (Repeats Sat Nov 3 2:30am)

Is there any way to tie giant robots and war into a Halloween theme? No? Okay then.

Kami Chu
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday October 30 5:00pm - Episode 14 "Dream Colored Message" (Repeats Tue Oct 30 8:00pm, Wed Oct 31 12:30am, 12:00pm)

There's, uh, nothing scarier than little girls, right?!? Ones with divine powers, even!!!

Last Exile
(G4TechTV Canada)
Sunday October 28 8:00pm - Episode 15 "Fairy Chess" (Repeats Mon Oct 29 12:00am)

Nothing spooky in Last Exile, unless quality frightens you, which would be more sad than scary, really. This week, the Sylvana is reunited, and Claus and Lavie are presented with a photograph of some bittersweet memories.

Naruto
(Cartoon Network)
-Saturday October 27 9:00pm - Episode 110 "Formation: The Sasuke Retrieval Squad"
-Saturday October 27 9:30pm - Episode 111 "Sound vs. Leaf"

As cronies from the Sound Village make off with Sasuke, Shikamaru is put to the task of rescuing his comrade, and assemble a team of talented Genin. Yes, that means Naruto, for the curious.

(YTV)
Friday November 2 8:00pm - Episode 111 "Sound vs. Leaf"

For the appropriate synopsis for this episode, look above! For others, look below!

One Piece
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday October 27 10:00pm - Episode 109 "Legendary Family: Noland the Liar"

Luffy's straw-hat crew catches up with Noland "the Liar" for clues to the "Sky Island," while other ruffians of Mock Town assemble to relieve Noland of his gold. Luffy isn't likely to take such an act lying down, so expect lots of punching.

Pokemon
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday October 27 9:30am - Episode 500 "Buizel Your Way Out of This"

Sweet lassoing leopards! FIVE HUNDRED EPISODES. If that doesn't send a chill and a shiver down your spine, check your pulse. In this decidedly landmark episode, Ash and his pals seek a powerful Buizel which is some kind of Pokemon I guess.

Saiyuki Reload Gunlock
(AZNTV)
-Monday October 29 8:30pm - Episode 1 (Repeats Tue Oct 30 1:30am, 5:30am)
-Tuesday October 30 8:30pm - Episode 2 (Repeats Wed Oct 31 1:30am, 5:30am)
-Wednesday October 31 8:30pm - Episode 3 (Repeats Thu Nov 1 1:30am, 5:30am)

The third season of the surprisingly-popular bishounen-with-guns adaptation of the historical Journey to the West novel begins in earnest on AZNTV, which means very few of you have access to it and those that do already know about it and don't need me to remind them. Well you know what? Who are YOU to say what I can and cannot do? The only people who are allowed to tell me what to do are my mother, my father, my older siblings, some of my younger siblings, the parking attendant, all eight of my bosses, my lovely, charming editor, the equally charming ANN staff writers that outrank me, the phone company, Domino's Pizza, and the members of my Second Life Swingers' community. So here it is: This week on Saiyuki Reload Gunlock, Goku is stuck in the afterlife! And what of his companions? So there.

Shin Chan
(Razer)
-Monday October 29 10:00pm - Episode 13 "Swimming, Diving and Scuba Team" (Repeats Tue Oct 30 1:30am)
-Monday October 29 10:30pm - Episode 14 "Untrue Romance - The Corpse Whisperer - Concerto in the Key of Butt Minor" (Repeats Tue Oct 30 2:00am)

Shin Chan's flagrant display of bodily appendages is probably scarier than any bats and witches and crap like that. Watch heartily, Canadian viewers, and prepare to be amused and slightly disgusted with yourself afterwards.

Tenjho Tenge
(Fuse)
Saturday November 3 12:30am - Episode TBA

For the record, in case I haven't explained it before, TBA stands for "To Be Announced." Just so we're clear here, and I don't get any angry letters from stupid people saying something like "Episode 'TBA' of Tenjho Tenge did not air on Saturday November 3 at 12:30am. Episode 17 did. Please address this issue. With money."

Texhnolyze
(G4TechTV Canada)
Saturday October 27 8:30pm - Episode 15 "Shapes" (Repeats Sun Oct 28 12:30am)

Texhnolyze is another fine show to watch in order to give you the seasonally-appropriate willies. Not because of any horror or gore or whatnot, but I'll be damned to think of a creepier, dirtier dystopia than the one Texhnolyze dreams up.

Tokyo Underground
(G4TechTV Canada)
Sunday October 28 8:30pm - Episode 15 "Broken Bonds" (Repeats Mon Oct 29 12:30am)

"Underground" implies something a tad different than the norm, usually - hence, "underground music." Tokyo Underground is actually a relatively staid action show, so there's really nothing "Underground" about it, aside from anime's somewhat cult status in an of itself. Arguing with myself over petty definitions: You're reading The Click!

MOVIES/SPECIALS

Howl's Moving Castle
(Encore WAM)
Wednesday October 31 10:00am (Repeats Wed Oct 31 8:00pm)

Appleseed
(Encore Action)
Wednesday October 31 4:05pm

The Weathering Continent
(Encore Action)
Thursday November 1 5:50am

I gotta admit, the scene in Howl's Moving Castle where the Witch of the Waste attempts to walk her immensely fat body, with sweat rolling over her layers and layers of cellulite, is pretty creepy and disgusting. Appleseed and Weathering Continent, eh. You can do better.

So that's about it for The Click's big spook-tacular! Next week things will be back to their regular old boring ways, so make sure to T.P. everyone's house within a two-mile radius, because really, when else is such behavior of not tolerated, then at least expected? And drink a lot and eat copious amounts of candy. Basically act like a sociopath, dress up in a slutty or blasphemous costume, and eat and drink things that are horribly bad for you. God, Halloween is so awesome. Bye kids!
