Ring Horror Films' Sadako Gets 3D Live-Action Film

Japanese media company Kadokawa Shoten announced on Tuesday that a new live-action 3D film based on Sadako, the iconic ghost of the horror film Ring (Ringu), is currently in the works. Koji Suzuki, the author of the original novel series that inspired the film, has penned a new original story for the film, which is tentatively titled Sadako 3D.
In the film, Sadako is the vengeful ghost of the daughter of a famous psychic. She is connected to a cursed video tape featuring a collection of disturbing images; those who watch the tape are killed one week later.
American director Gore Verbinski remade the original 1998 Ring film in the United States as The Ring. Karuho Shiina's manga Kimi ni Todoke also references the popular film; the main character's dark hair, shy nature, and name — Sawako — results in her being nicknamed "Sadako."
Kadokawa announced several other live-action films. Takeshi Furusawa is directing one based on Yukito Ayatsuji's Another horror novel, which is also getting an anime adaptation. Shuichi Okita (Ryoichi & Kiyoshi, Omoshiro Nankyoku Ryurinin) is helming the tentatively titled Kitsutsuki to Ame (Woodpecker and Rain) "human entertainment film of laughter and tears." Yojiro Takita (Oscar-winning Departures) is directing the previously announced live-action film based on the Tenchi Meisatsu historical novel by Tow Ubukata (Le Chevalier D'Eon/Fafner/Mardock Scramble).
Kadokawa's Tuesday press conference announced a new anime film called A Letter to Momo (Momo e no Tegami) from Jin-Roh director Hiroyuki Okiura. It also confirmed the main staff and release windows for the Sora no Otoshimono and Strike Witches films.
