"Velonica," Aqua Timez's new opening theme song for the Bleach television series, debuted at #2 on Oricon's weekly singles chart for January 13-19 with 32,830 copies sold. Another new television anime opening theme song, Major's "Hey! Hey! Alright" by Scha Dara Parr (featuring Kaela Kimura), also debuted at #10 with 7,371 copies.

Porno Graffitti's "Koyoi, Tsuki wa Miesu tomo" theme song for the Bleach: Fade to Black - Kimi no Na o Yobu anime film fell to #13 in its fifth week, but it sold 5,115 more copies. "Yume no Tsubomi," the Remioromen trio's theme song for the live-action film adaptation of Masasumi Kakizaki's Kansen Rettō horror manga, dropped to #15 after moving 4,943 more copies.

Angela Aki's "Tegami ~Haikei Jūgo no Kimi e~" lingered at #16 in its 17th week with 4,838 more copies. The Shirogumi computer graphics studio had set this song to animation with original drawings by Fruits Basket manga creator Natsuki Takaya for NHK's Minna no Uta television shorts. The single received a bump from Aki's performance on the Kōhaku Uta Gassen (Red and White Song Battle), the heavily watched New Year's Eve singing competition.

The #1 single was Junko Akimoto's "Ai no Mama de" with 34,569 copies in its 51st week. Last year, Akimoto became the oldest singer to make a debut at Kōhaku Uta Gassen. At 61 years old, she also became the oldest solo singer to top Oricon's weekly singles chart.
