Saru Lock, Sgt. Frog V open; Haruhi returns to top 10 with "repeater campaign"

The live-action film adaptation of Naoki Serizawa's Saru Lock action comedy manga series opened in Japan at #4 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's box office chart. According to Box Office Mojo, it earned the equivalent of US$993,703 on 226 screens during its first weekend.

Chō Gekijō-ban Keroro Gunsō Tanjō! Kyūkyoku Keroro Kiseki no Jikūjima de Arimasu!! also opened this past weekend at #6 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart and #7 on Box Office Mojo's chart. It earned US$662,651 on 144 screens. This is the fifth film inspired by Mine Yoshizaki's manga about a frog-like alien stranded on Earth.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya film, the first ever film in the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise, jumped back into the top 10 on the strength of a "repeater campaign" in its fourth weekend. It rose from #12 to #9 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart and from #11 to #6 on Box Office Mojo's chart. It garnered $663,233 — a 47.5% increase from the previous weekend's box office— on just 24 screens for a gross-to-date of US$5,001,440.

To encourage fans to watch The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya again, the producers launched a "Film Bookmark Repeater Campaign" late last month. Fans can redeem the two movie ticket stubs for a bookmark made from the 35mm film reels of the movie. (At least one of the ticket stubs has to be dated on February 27 or later.)
