Outdoor Barbican Screening of Nausicaa on August 26

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Film will begin at 8.30 p.m. in the Barbican Centre's Sculpture Court

Tickets are available for a summer outdoor screening of Hayao Miyazaki's 1984 film Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind on Saturday August 26. The screening will take place at 8.30 p.m. in the Barbican Centre's Sculpture Court.

The film is described on the website as follows:

"This animated beauty from Studio Ghibli follows Princess Nausicaä, a brave young adventurer who sets out to save her people and their land. 1,000 years after an apocalyptic war, a poisonous jungle now covers much of the land. Princess Nausicaä searches for ways to live in harmony with the toxic environment and must battle the greed of others as they seek to dominate the natural world.

"Filled with stunning and iconic imagery, this haunting sci-fi allegory garnered widespread acclaim and proved to be hugely influential; notably 15 years later with the Wachowski's The Matrix. The film was ahead of its time in terms of female representation, with a highly skilled, resourceful, physically tough yet kind female lead, the likes of which were rarely seen on screen back in the 80s.

"Filled with breath-taking landscapes and fantastical creature designs that will contrast beautifully with our brutalist Barbican architecture, this beautiful Hayao Miyazaki creation can't be missed."

Seating is first come, first served. In the event of "extreme or unsafe" weather, the event will be cancelled and refunded. More information is available at the above link.
