Sentai Filmworks Signs Deal with Tatsunoko Production (Updated)

posted on by Karen Ressler
License deal for 11 titles includes Casshan, Gatchaman

Sentai Filmworks announced on Thursday that it has signed a deal with Tatsunoko Production release some of the company's anime series, including its previously-announced license for Gatchaman. The company has confirmed that the license also includes Casshan, but will announce other titles, release dates, formats, and digital outlets over the next year.

Shinzō Ningen Casshan, which aired from 1973-1974, follows a cyborg who rises against the robotic armies that have subjugated all of humanity. Discotek Media licensed the 1993 remake, but mentioned in May that it was unable to acquire the license for the original show.

The same story was also remade as a 2004 live-action film by Kazuaki Kiriya, and as the 2008 Casshern Sins television anime series by the Studio Madhouse. DreamWorks' Go Fish Pictures division released the 2004 live-action film version, and Funimation released Casshern Sins.

Discotek Media has previously licensed Tatsunoko Production's New Hurricane Polymar, Samurai Pizza Cats, and Tekkaman Blade II anime.

Tatsunoko Production was founded in 1962 and released its first animation Space Age in 1965. The studio is best known for works such as Mach Go Go Go (Speed Racer), Gatchaman, and Samurai Pizza Cats. In recent years, the company has continued to assist in production for shows such as Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu, Yozakura Quartet, and Gatchaman Crowds.

Update: Sentai Filmworks clarified via a press release that the deal will include 11 titles.
